WHAT:
5 Day Hide Tanning Camp where we will learn a method of traditionally brain tanning white tail deer hides to create beautiful soft smoked suede/ buckskin.
Each person will receive their own hide to work on and will bring home the completed smoked buckskin they tanned themselves.
We will be working outdoors in the elements, rain or shine
Hide tanning is a physically and emotionally demanding process. It is a rewarding life affirming process that connects us to our ancestors & our deer kin
Participants will be encouraged to go at their own pace and take breaks. We will help each complete our hides.
WHO:
Anyone is welcome to apply! Priority given to Indigenous folks and 2SLGBTQIA+ folks.
CAMP TIMING:
Thursday August 28th - Monday September 1st
10am - 6pm Daily
*We will aim to wrap up earlier on the final day
CAMP LOCATION:
Instructor's Home in Sheguiandah, Manitoulin Island, ON (10 minute drive from Little Current)
INCLUDES:
- 5 days of in-depth hide tanning instruction in a small group setting
-Hands-on learning the steps involved in traditional brain tanning deer hide
- One-on-one instruction
- 1 White tail deer hide per person to be completed at hide camp and go home with each participant
- All required hide tanning tools, equipment & materials needed for deer hide tanning
- Hide theory interwoven
- Daily Q & A's
- Light snacks & refreshments
-Indoor bathroom and kitchen access
DOES NOT INCLUDE:
-Camping or overnight accommodations on site
*There are campgrounds, motels, hotels & air bnb's near the camp location.
-Meals
* There are restaurants, food trucks & a grocery store 10 minute drive from the camp location. Participants will have access to the kitchen on site to make their own lunches.

I'm a queer non-binary person with mixed French, Scottish, British Settler & Georgian Bay Metis ancestry
Come learn with me at my home on beautiful Mnidoo Mnising (Manitoulin Island)
I’ve been tanning since 2017 and teaching the skill since 2019. I'm looking forward to sharing my knowledge & deep love for this traditional art form!
Please note: I use gender neutral they/ them / theirs pronouns. Please familiarize yourself with how to use these pronouns before attending.
HIDE CAMP COST:
$700/ person ($140/ day for 5 days)
Upon being offered a spot a non refundable $150 deposit is required
The remaining $550 camp fee will be due on August 6th

2 FREE SPOTS FOR ANISHINAABE FOLKS:
There are 2 free spots available for 2 Anishinaabe participants
Priority given to folks from Manitoulin Island & surrounding area communities, but any Nish folks interested are welcome to apply for these spots
CAMP SIZE:
There are 7 spots available + 1 instructor
This will be a small intimate learning environment with plenty of 1:1 instruction

APPLICATION PROCESS:
The first 7 people to apply who are a good fit for the camp will be offered spots by email so please apply ASAP and check your email!
People who are offered a spot will have 7 days to confirm by email and send their $150 deposit
If I don't hear back, a reminder email will be sent 48 hours beforehand, after that your spot will be offered to the next person
LOCATION ACCESSIBILITY:
The outdoor space we'll be tanning in is flat and wheelchair accessible. Half of the space is on gravel and half is on grass.
The space does not have a wheelchair accessible bathroom. If you use mobility aids and need a wheelchair accessible bathroom, I think we can figure something out on site, please reach out.
